Samuel Ber is a Belgian drummer, composer and improviser. With his projects Pentadox (with Sylvain Debaisieux and Bram De Looze), the Malaby/ Dumoulin/Ber trio, Reservoir Ghosts (with Lotte Anker, Daniel Levin and Soet Kempeneer) and the interdisciplinary and entirely improvised performance Scaphandres Party, he seeks creative means of accessing a state of collective flux where individual voices, points of view, concepts and contexts coexist and merge.

He also plays with KARTET, Benoît Delbecq & The Multiplexers, Antoine Viard’s Park’R, Laurent Blondiau’s Mâäk and MikMâäk, Bo Van Der Werf’s Mantra Magnets, Susanne Abbuehl, Soet Kempeneer’s Dream Tree trio with guest Magic Malik, Richard Bonnet quartet, Jordi Cassagne’s Barbastelle and Sol Léna-Schroll’s Der Baum trio. … as well as with Michaël Attias, Guillaume Orti, Marc Ducret, Antonin-Tri Hoang, Antonin Rayon, Aymeric Avice, Sylvaine Hélary, Felix Henkelhausen, Matthieu Michel, Nicolas Thys, Matthieu
Donarier, Eve Risser, Santiago Quintans, Etienne Renard, Hasse Poulsen and Kris Defoort’s “An Old Monk” with Belgian actor Josse De Pauw.

For the theatre, he composed the soundtrack for “Plainte Contre X” at the Théâtre de Poche (Brussels). He also works regularly with video artist Jeanne Cousseau, actors Yoann Blanc and Faustine Boissery, lighting designer Sam Mary and dancer and choreographer Carole Bordes.

In 2016, he took part in the Banff International Workshop in Jazz & Creative Music, directed by Vijay Iyer. In December 2018, BOZAR devoted an evening to him entitled “Focus – Samuel Ber”. The same year, he was awarded the BAEF Music Fellowship and Fulbright Student, enabling him to study composition and deepen his musical experience for a year in New York (2019-2020). In 2020, he will be artist-in-residence at Rataplan (Antwerp). He is a laureate of the Banff Centre, Fondation Meyer and Fondation Royaumont and has been in residence at the Théâtre National de Bruxelles, the Fondation Royaumont and Rataplan (Antwerp).
