Sarvin Asa is an Italian-Iranian cellist. She completed her three-year classical studies at the Scuola di Musica di Fiesole, graduating with distinction in 2020, and then went on to Norway (Stavanger) and Denmark (Master in Solo Perfomance at the Royal Academy of Music Aarhus, completed in 2023). Finding her identity in interdisciplinarity and versatility, she is specialising as an improviser by taking courses at the most renowned Italian institutions, including the Accademia Chigiana, Stauffer Center for Strings, and the Research Workshops on Improvisational Praxis at the Siena Jazz Academy, under the guidance of Stefano Battaglia.
This versatility allows her both to play in chamber groups and symphony orchestras (Aarhus Symfoniorkester, Young Musicians European Orchestra, Aarhus Sinfonietta, among others), and to perform as an improviser/contemporary musician with artists in the experimental-new-music field such as Abel Selaocoe, Theo Blackman, Walter Prati, Stefano Battaglia, Harris Lambrakis, Kaja Draksler, or in larger ensembles such as Ensemble Tabula Rasa (from 2020, in residence at Accademia Chigiana), Kunst-grillen (Norway). Also in the field of improvisation, she has been selected by the project ‘Young Italian talents in the world’ to perform with the Tetratkis Quartet at several Italian Cultural Institutes, including Berlin (2022), Tel Aviv (2023); she has also performed in various ensembles for several European festivals, including Copenhagen Jazz Festival, Chigiana International Summer Festival 2022, New Music For Strings.
She also conducts interdisciplinary residencies with contemporary dancers aimed at developing performarces where musical language meets dance in a synthesis of choreography and improvisation. Active as a performer mainly in Denmark and Italy, she currently resides in Copenhagen. In addition to her performing activities, she taught cello and string orchestra at Aarhus Musikskole from 2021 to 2023.
